Flats and houses are normally rented or sold without furniture in Germany. Built-in kitchens, closets and shelves as well as washing machines, clothes dryers, window shades and lighting must generally be purchased separately. It is often the case in Germany that renters bring their own kitchen and take it away again at the end of the lease. Exceptions can naturally be agreed upon.
If you are arriving without furniture initially, you can find short-term rentals of furnished rooms or flats. Many universities, colleges, technical institutes, research institutes and larger companies in Rhineland-Palatinate have their own guest houses and staff residences where you can find an initial rental.
The Rhineland-Palatinate Welcome Centers are happy to help you look for a flat or house with additional information and tips. They can also refer you to contacts that can help in your search.
If you find something suitable in the newspaper, you should call the landlord or seller. Sometimes a series of reference numbers or letters are included, known as the Chiffre. You must reply in writing to an ad with Chiffre by sending a letter to the newspaper. The letter is automatically forwarded to the landlord or seller.
